@Joshua God is speaking against the prophets who were speaking in the name of God. God takes very seriously those who mislead His people. The audience was those who had made themselves comfortable leading the congregation.

And the reason this is important is 1) that same audience is deceiving the descendents of Israel to this day and 2) within Christianity there are many who peddle a Christianity that is in congruent with the Bible.
