I would recommend looking at Justin Peter’s videos on Hillsong and Bethel and why we shouldn’t listen to their music or sing it in church.
Keen on getting opinions! What do you think about listening to Hillsong?
I guess I haven't looked into it enough but I'm wondering if I should be cutting out Hillsong worship? I'm still building my worship playlist and I feel nostalgic about these classics.
No one's perfect and as long as these songs are worshipping God, we can still use them to praise Him... right?
Hi
I don't think you even need to consider the sinful disqualifying actions of their leaders in order to cut them out. Their songs being self-worship and filled with emotionally manipulative music should be enough imo. Any song of theirs that is "good" has a much deeper counterpart in another Christian song. For example, "Cornerstone" is incredibly shallow when compared to "In Christ Alone." Stay away from Hillsong and their ilk.
'Cancel culture' is a huge question in society atm. And a great opportunity for Christians to think about the way we are called to love, albeit with discernment 🤓
My take on it is, ask yourself, is this music bringing closer to Jesus, and worshipping Jesus not man? If it is but you've come across some questionable stories etc then go and pray about it. Take time to pray about it and not just do it because other people are downing hillsong or getting rid of it on their playlist otherwise we will stop listening to a lot of these worship songs then coz the people involved are not perfect
That's my feeling too! No one's perfect and God still accepts us ✨
Are we cutting out David’s psalms? He was a murderer right?
@Josh ahh I love this perspective! It slaps 🔥
David also repented…. Hillsong are not repentant of their heresy
“What a Beautiful Name” will forever be atop my worship playlist ❤️
@Lachlan off topic, cool name bro 😎
Follow your conscience. Hillsong like any other artist or type of music style has great songs and not-so-great songs. Open a Bible next to the lyrics, and if there is Scripture that can back what your singing, go in peace and let not your conscience condemn you.
Hey what happened with hillsong? Did they do something bad?
Don’t cut them out @Breann.
There is a very big difference between being Christian and Religiosity. What would Jesus do ?
Exactly. I don't want to get caught up in cancel culture. I think Jesus would care about someone's heart posture behind anything. That being said I don't want to be naively trying to rebrand something as worship if it's clearly not (e.g Christian yoga). What do you think?
If the lyrics are good and express worship then enjoy them.
h ttps://youtu. be/L7pWG4BvVas?si=BBc2fSQGUehrTjtU Basically, Montanism and self worship
@John man you are locked in religiosity.
@Luiz If by "religiosity" you mean reverent worship for God, then yes.
Depends on your reasons why you want to cut it off.
I understand the critique is 1. The former lead pastor’s actions & 2. The songs “aren’t” worship. As an Aussie I have followed for years. Yes, many of their recent songs are not worship (defined as for God, about God, because of God). However I truely believe that songs which are prayers (Whole Heart) or teach theology (Who you say I am) have a place and a strength. Research shows (Milgram studies) show that people follow their leaders direction without questions - let’s not judge 💁🏼♀️
@Amber "Who you say I am" is the best example of why no one should listen to Hillsong. The chorus blasphemously applies the "I Am" statement God uses to describe himself. Refer to the "I am" statements used by Jesus in John's gospel alone
8:24 unless you believe that oI am he you will die in your sins.” 8:28 I am he 8:58 Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am 18:5 I am he I am the bread of life. 6:35, 48, 51. I am the light of the world. 8:12; 9:5. I am the door of the sheep. 10:7, 9. I am the good shepherd. 10:11, 14. I am the resurrection and the life. 11:25. I am the way, the truth, and the life. 14:6. I am the true vine. 15:1 These all assert that Jesus is God
and are a specific reference to the Father, , YHVH (IAm that which I Am) Ex 13:4. Either the writers knew this and arrogantly decided to apply this title to themselves, or they are so devoid of scriptural knowledge that they are unaware of God's claim to the name "I am". Either way, between this and the mindless repetition designed to cause people to enter an altered state of consciousness, which they then falsely attribute to the Holy Spirit, in defiance of Jesus' (Mt 6:7)
They have proven themselves to be Montanist heretics and blasphemers, deserving condemnation and completely unfit to lead. It's hardly surprising that the rotten fruit of a sex offender like Frank Houston led to the rotten fruits of modern Hillsong self worship.
@John I think I am picking up what you’re putting down, yet I don’t think you’ve looked the lyrics… “I’m a child of God” This is such a powerful song for someone who is hurting and isolated. I couldn’t tell you the number of times I have cried, forcing myself to sing this on the way to school pick up because I needed to be reminded I am not forsaken. This isn’t a worship song, this a prayer - there’s a time and a place for Hillsong music IMO
U SHOULD DEF NOT CUT IT OUT 😬👀
What is the critique for hillsong about? I haven’t heard anything?
Think they are more about worshiping themselvs then God
As long as it’s about worshipping God. I wouldn’t be cutting it off.
@JJV It isn't, so there you go
@John which songs specifically?
@JJV All of them
@John how so?
@John Made Me Glad is a beautiful worship song I LOVE to bust out!! Hosanna is another favourite worship song my Hillsong. Not all of their tracks are worship and therefore not all should not be sung in a church. Yet there is beautiful theology in many of their songs 🙏
@Amber Their theology includes the false "prosperity gospel" (which is no gospel at all), and the heresy of Montanism. There are death metal songs with better theology than anything from Hillsong, but that doesn't mean we should recommend them.
@John could you please provide some of their songs which focus on prosperity so I can be selective with my listening? I haven’t recognised this in the music and I appreciate the warning 🙏
@Amber Scroll up to my first comment with the link, remove the space from it and enjoy. In short, not only are their sonfs the problem, the entire worship model is broken.
@John I don’t believe we’re looking at the same comment. I am unaware of any songs from Hillsong that preach prosperity gospel. If you can’t back your comments, please be prayerful before you make them 🙏
@Amber I don't know which ones you're talking about. I've provided dozens of biblical references, perhaps read them?
